RESUMO A escassez dos recursos florestais integrada à necessidade de aquisição de produtos mais ecológicos demanda o uso de outros tipos de biomassa, além da madeira no setor construtivo. Diante disso, o mesocarpo do dendê - resíduo oriundo da agroindústria e com grande potencial de utilização para desenvolvimento de novos materiais - surge como alternativa na elaboração de painéis lignocelulósicos em substituição ao MDF (medium density fiberboard) convencionalmente utilizado. Dessa forma, o presente trabalho demonstrou a viabilidade da produção e a integridade estrutural desse tipo de painel na fabricação de elementos construtivos a serem empregados na construção civil, mediante estudo comparativo entre suas propriedades com as de painéis de MDF. A metodologia consistiu na realização de ensaios de caracterização dos painéis, por meio da determinação de suas propriedades físicas (absorção de água, inchamento e densidade) e mecânicas (resistência à flexão e módulo de elasticidade), além da morfologia dos painéis produzidos, mediante a técnica de microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV), análise química (por meio do espectro de infravermelho com transformada de Fourier) e térmica, por meio de curvas termogravimétricas e derivada. Dos resultados obtidos, tem-se que a produção desses painéis sem aglutinantes, obtidos pela incorporação do mesocarpo de dendê, agrega valor à cadeia produtiva do dendê, além de surgir como alternativa aos desafios inerentes à produção tradicional dos painéis de madeira e, consequentemente, como opção de elemento construtivo a ser integrado à construção civil.

ABSTRACT The lack of forest resources integrated with the need of purchasing more environmentally friendly products requires the use of other types of biomass besides wood in the construction sector. Therefore, the dendê mesocarp - waste arising from the agro-industry and with great use potential in developing new materials - is an alternative in the preparation of lignocellulosic panels to replace MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard), that is conventionally used. Thus, this work demonstrated the feasibility of the production and the structural integrity of this type of panel in the manufacture of building blocks to be used in civil construction through a comparative study of their properties with the MDF panels. The methodology consists in performing characterization tests in panels through determining their physical (water absorption, swelling and density) and mechanical (flexion resistance and modulus of elasticity) properties, besides analysing the morphology of the panels produced by the Scanning Electron Microscopy (MEV) technique, performing a chemical (via infrared spectrum Fourier transform) and thermal analysis through derived thermogravimetric curves. The results obtained suggest that the production of these panels without a binder, obtained by the incorporation of dendê mesocarp, adds value to the production chain of dendê, in addition to emerge as an alternative to the challenges inherent to the traditional production of wood panels and, consequently, is considered as an option of a constructive element to be integrated with the construction.

In this work microfiber mats of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) gelatin were successfully fabricated by using Solution Blow Spinning technique. The concentration and viscosity of fish gelatin solution, in acid acetic/water (80% v/v), were correleted to the morphology and diameter of the gelatin microfibers. It was found that increased solution viscosity leads to increase of fibers diameters from approximately 280 nm at viscosity ~ 0.085 Pa.s. to approximately 1195 nm at viscosity ~ 1.877 Pa.s. The TG thermograms showed similar thermal profiles for all fibrous mat gelatins with thermal stability at temperatures below 180°C. The DSC curve showed two endothermic peaks being the second one, in the range of 100-130°C, strongly influenced by the microfiber diameters. It shifts to higher temperature increasing the microfiber diameter. This behavior was associated to the diffusion of water in the microfibers. Combined DSC/TG results showed a significant influence of the microfiber diameter on the water absorption and desorption process.

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar uma combinação adequada entre o polissacarídeo galactomanana de algaroba e a proteína gelatina de tilápia-do-nilo no filme compósito galactomanana/gelatina para aplicações em embalagem de alimentos, e avaliar a influência de nanocristais de celulose (NCC) sobre o filme. A galactomanana e a gelatina foram extraídas de sementes de algaroba e resíduos de tilápia-do-nilo, respectivamente, e os NCC de vagens de algaroba, por hidrólise ácida. A proporção galactomanana:gelatina com a melhor combinação de propriedades mecânicas e de barreira foi usada para produzir filmes bionanocompósitos, pela adição de diferentes teores de NCC à dispersão de galactomanana/gelatina. A proporção galactomanana:gelatina de 1:1 apresentou boa combinação entre permeabilidade a vapor de água (PVA) e resistência mecânica. As propriedades dos filmes foram melhoradas pela adição de NCC, principalmente a 5% (m/m), que produziu os máximos valores de resistência e módulo, com mais de 30% de aumento em relação ao filme controle, e os menores valores de PVA, 23% a menos que o controle. Maiores teores de NCC resultaram em agregação dos nanocristais e prejudicaram as propriedades de barreira e mecânicas. O filme nanocompósito com galactomanana, gelatina e NCC nas respectivas proporções de 1:1:0,1 apresentam as melhores propriedades gerais para aplicações em embalagem de alimentos.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to determine a suitable combination of the polysaccharide mesquite seed gum (MSG) and the protein Nile tilapia fish gelatin in the composite MSG/gelatin film for food packaging applications, and to evaluate the effect of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) on the film. MSG and gelatin were extracted from mesquite seeds and Nile tilapia residues, respectively, and the CNCs from mesquite pods by acid hydrolysis. The MSG:gelatin ratio with the best combination of tensile and barrier properties was used to produce the bionanocomposite films, by adding different CNC contents to the MSG/gelatin dispersion. The MSG:gelatin ratio of 1:1 had a good combination of water vapor permeability (WVP) and tensile strength. The properties of the MSG/gelatin films were improved by the CNCs, mainly at 5 wt%, which produced the highest tensile strength and modulus, more than 30% higher than those of the control film, and the lowest WVP, 23% lower than that of the control. Higher CNC contents resulted in the aggregation of nanocrystals, impairing barrier and tensile properties. The nanocomposite film with MSG, gelatin, and CNCs at the respective weight ratios of 1:1:0.1 presents the best overall properties for food packaging applications.

This study evaluated the effect of adding poly (ethylene methyl acrylate) (EMA) and cotton linter (CL) on the properties of recycled poly (ethylene terephthalate) (PETrec). For this, PETrec/EMA blend and PETrec/EMA/CL composite were developed. In order to improve the interfacial adhesion and the properties of these materials, ethylene/methyl acrylate/glycidyl methacrylate terpolymer (EMA-GMA) and polyethylene-grafted maleic anhydride (PE-g-MAH) were added. The rheological results showed that the addition of EMA increased and the addition of 1 wt% of CL reduced the viscosity. The morphological analysis of the non-compatibilized blend and composite showed poor interfacial adhesion. Polymer blends with 2 and 6 wt% of EMA had better mechanical properties, since these formulations have the smallest average particle diameter of 0.58 and 1.00 µm, respectively. The mechanical testing of composites showed a material with higher maximum strength and elasticity modulus than polymer blend when analyzed at the same EMA phase concentration. The use of EMA-GMA was effective in reducing the size of particles of the EMA in the blend.

Biodegradable compounds of poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL)/ cotton linter were melting mixed with filling content ranging from 1% to 5% w/w. Cotton linter is an important byproduct of textile industry; in this work it was used in raw state and after acid hydrolysis. According to the results of torque rheometry no decaying of viscosity took place during compounding, evidencing absence of breaking down in molecular weight. The thermal stability increased by 20% as observed in HDT for PCL/cotton nanolinter compounds. Adding cotton linter to PCL didn't change its crystalline character as showed by XRD; however an increase in degree of crystallinity was observed by means of DSC. From mechanical tests in tension was observed an increase in ductility of PCL, and from mechanical tests in flexion an increase in elastic modulus upon addition of cotton linter, whereas impact strength presented lower values for PCL/cotton linter and PCL/cotton nanolinter compounds. SEM images showed that PCL presents plastic fracture and cotton linter has an interlacing fibril structure with high L/D ratio, which are in agreement with matrix/fibril morphology observed for PCL/cotton linter compounds. PCL/cotton linter compounds made in this work cost less than neat PCL matrix and presented improved properties making feasible its commercial use.

RESUMO O isolamento de nanocristais de celulose (CNCs) de fibras vegetais é uma alternativa promissora para sua aplicação como reforço em matrizes poliméricas. A caracterização dos CNCs é fundamental para a confiabilidade da técnica, além de determinar as aplicações possíveis a partir de cada tipo de fibra. A partir da técnica de microscopia de força atômica, um estudo da morfologia e distribuição dos CNCs de semente de manga, vagem de algaroba, pseudocaule da bananeira e fibra do mesocarpo de dendê foi realizado neste trabalho. Os CNCs foram obtidos via reação hidrolítica com ácido sulfúrico em concentrações que variaram de acordo com a fonte da fibra. Os resultados obtidos revelaram dimensões variando de 300 a 500 nm em comprimento e 4 a 16 nm em diâmetro. A apresentação morfológica em forma de agulha demonstrou que o isolamento das fibras de celulose em CNCs foi efetiva. A razão de aspecto associada à formação cilíndrica em agulha dos CNCs isolados evidenciou o alto potencial das fontes de dendê e de vagem de algaroba para o reforço de bionanocompósitos.

ABSTRACT The isolation of vegetables fiber in cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) comprises a promising alternative for application as reinforcement in polymer matrices. The characterization of the CNCs is essential to evaluate the reliability of this technique and to determine the possible applications from each vegetable fiber type. Therefore it is proposed here a study with atomic force microscopy technique to analyze the morphology and distribution of CNCs from mango seed, mesquite pods, banana pseudostem and fiber palm mesocarp. CNCs were obtained by acid hydrolysis with sulfuric acid in concentrations that varied according to the fiber sources. The results showed dimensions ranging from 300 to 500 nm in length and 4 to 16 nm in diameter. The morphology obtained needle-like show that the isolation of cellulose fibers to CNCs was. The aspect ratio related to the cylindrical needle organization of the isolated CNCs indicate the high potential of the palm mesocarp and mesquite pods as reinforcement on bionanocomposites.

The need to develop and commercialize materials containing vegetal fibers has grown in order to reduce environmental impact and reach sustainability. Large amounts of lignocellulosic materials are generated around the world from several human activities. The lignocellulosic materials are composed of cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, extractives and ashes. Recently these constituents have been used in different applications; in particular, cellulose has been the subject of numerous works on the development of composite materials reinforced with natural fibers. Many studies have led to composite materials reinforced with fibers to improve the mechanical, physical, and thermal properties. Furthermore, lignocellulosic materials have been treated to apply in innovative solutions for efficient and sustainable systems. This paper aims to review the lignocellulosic fibers characteristics, as well as to present their applications as reinforcement in composites of different polymeric matrices.

O consumo da água de coco verde, in natura ou industrializada, vem gerando um grande problema ambiental, devido ao destino final da casca dos frutos. Aproximadamente 85% do peso bruto do coco verde é constituído pelas cascas, que são acumuladas em lixões ou às margens de estradas. Como a minimização da geração desse resíduo implicaria a redução da atividade produtiva associada, o seu aproveitamento torna-se uma necessidade. Neste sentido, este estudo teve como objetivo investigar as características da fibra de coco verde de diversos cultivares em função do ponto de colheita dos frutos, na composição química, nas propriedades mecânicas e térmicas, como forma de contribuir para avaliar seu potencial de aplicação na elaboração de novos materiais. Os resultados mostraram que a variação da composição química em função da cultivar de coco verde foi na faixa de 37,2 ± 0,8% a 43,9±0,7% e de 31,5±0,1% a 37,4±0,5% para os teores de lignina e celulose, respectivamente. A composição química não variou significativamente em função do ponto de maturação para a fibra da cultivar Anão-Verde-de-Jiqui (AVeJ). A fibra de cultivares de coco verde e AVeJ em diferentes pontos de maturação apresentaram propriedades térmicas e mecânicas semelhantes, as quais são próximas das propriedades das fibras de coco maduro, demonstrando, portanto, um potencial equivalente para serem utilizadas como reforço em matrizes poliméricas.

The consumption of water of green coconut in natura or industrialized has generated a large amount of residues that are disposed in landfills or in roadside. The husks residues correspond to around 85% of the weight of the fruit and present slow decomposition process. This environmental problem requires alternative solutions. In order to assessing to potential of the immature (green) coconut fibers to be used as reinforcement material in polymer matrices, the chemical composition, thermal and mechanical characteristics of the coconut fibers originated from 5 immature coconut cultivars of the Nana variety at 4 different ages were studied. According to the results obtained, the change of the chemical composition with the cultivar was from 37.2 ± 0.8% to 43.9±0.7% and from 7.4±0.5% to 31.5±0.1% for lignin and cellulose contents, respectively. The age did not significantly influence the chemical composition of 'Anão Verde de Jequi' (AVeJ) cultivar. All the cultivars and AVeJ, in different ages showed approximately the same thermal and mechanical behaviors, which were similar to the mature coconut fiber properties. This study shows that the immature cultivars studied offer potential to be used as reinforcement in composites similarly to mature coconut fiber.

Uma análise integrada do atual uso dos recursos naturais do Perímetro Irrigado de Ayres de Souza, localizado no Vale do Acaraú, Ceará, foi realizada através do desenvolvimento de um índice de sustentabilidade agroecológica. Os dados dessa pesquisa foram oriundos de questionários aplicados a 33 produtores agrícolas beneficiados pelo projeto de irrigação. Os indicadores de sustentabilidade foram estimados pelo emprego de análise fatorial, método da análise fatorial/análise de componentes principais. O índice de sustentabilidade estimado a partir dos indicadores selecionados registrou uma situação de sustentabilidade fragilizada ou de insustentabilidade reversível. As unidades produtivas apresentaram um porcentual de 60,6% com alguma sustentabilidade; e os demais 39,4% estão em condições de insustentabilidade. Os resultados também mostraram que os fatores dominantes do índice de sustentabilidade foram: nível da atividade agrícola praticada, agricultura familiar, condições atuais do sistema água-solo e infra-estrutura, fontes alternativas de renda e experiência em tratos culturais.

The aim of this work was to make an analysis of natural resources at Ayres de Souza Irrigated District sited in Acaraú basin, Ceará, Brazil. This study was performed through an agro ecological sustainability index (ASI). The approach was based on 33 cross-over form applied to small farms located in the irrigated district. Factors Analysis/Principal Components Analysis were applied to select the sustainability indicators of the irrigated district as well as to define the agro ecological sustainability index. The results showed that the Index is capable of demonstrating clear differences among productivity unit management system with respect to sustainability. 60% of the pooled productivity units presented weak sustainability and the other 39.4% were unsustainable. The dominants factors of the Index were: level of agricultural management practices, family agriculture, framework of irrigation and alternative income source.

Análise Fatorial/Análise da Componente Principal (AF/ACP) foram empregadas com o objetivo de identificar os fatores determinantes (naturais e antrópicos) da qualidade das águas superficiais na bacia do Alto Acaraú, Ceará. Realizaram-se coletas trimestrais, no período de fev/2003 a mar/2004, em seis pontos localizados nas áreas de influência urbana e de drenagem de perímetros irrigados. Foram analisados os parâmetros pH, temperatura, cor, turbidez, nitrato, amônia total, amônia livre, amônia ionizada, sódio, cloretos, potássio, sulfato, dureza, cálcio, magnésio, alcalinidade total, alcalinidade do bicarbonato, condutividade elétrica, sólidos suspensos, oxigênio dissolvido, demanda bioquímica de oxigênio, fósforo total, ortofosfato solúvel, clorofila "A", coliformes totais e coliformes termotolerantes. Através das técnicas de estatística multivariada, AF/ACP, foram selecionadas as variáveis que explicavam o maior percentual da variância total dos dados. Três componentes são responsáveis pela estrutura da qualidade das águas explicando 88% da variância total. O modelo mostrou que o primeiro fator (39,81% da variância) expressou-se como um componente mineral. O segundo, explicando 29,22% da variância, apresentou-se como um componente de nutrientes. No terceiro fator (19,16% da variância), identificou-se como um componente de escoamento superficial das áreas agrícolas e clima. A rotação dos fatores, os parâmetros indicadores da qualidade das águas estão, principalmente, relacionados com a solubilidade dos sais (natural), com nutrientes e transporte de sedimentos (ação antrópica).

Factor analysis/Principal Component Analysis (FA/PCA) were applied to the data set on water quality in upper Acaraú River basin (Brazil) to study the effects caused by human activities on water. Variables were measured at six key sampling sites (villages and agricultural areas) in four campaigns from February/2003 to March/2004. The samples were analyzed for pH, temperature, color, electrical conductivity, turbidity, nitrate, ammonia, sodium, chloride, potassium, sulfate, total hardness, calcium, magnesium, total alkalinity, alkalinity bicarbonate, total suspended solids, dissolved oxygen (DO), 5-days biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), total phosphate, orthophosphate, chlorophyll-a, and feacal coliform. Multivariate statistical techniques, (FA/PCA), allowed the identification of variables that explain the major percent of total variance. Three components were identified as responsible for the data structure, explaining 88% of the total variance of the data set. Model showed that the first factor (39.81% of variance) assigned as mineralization factor. The second one (29.22% of variance) represented as nutrients group. The third factor (19.16% variance) assigned as a combination of agricultural area runoff and weathering. Varimax rotation showed that the mainly water quality parameters were related to mineralization (natural process) and non-point pollution (anthropogenic activities).

O objetivo deste trabalho é identificar os principais aspectos e impactos ambientais relacionados à carcinicultura em águas interiores, através da análise das etapas do processo e dos diferentes tipos de cultivo, em 32 fazendas localizadas nas bacias do Médio e Baixo Jaguaribe, Ceará, Brasil. Essa avaliação foi realizada aplicando-se questionários e realizando-se a caracterização dos efluentes e do solo de 3 viveiros selecionados. Os principais impactos ambientais estão relacionados à ocupação de áreas de preservação permanente pelos viveiros de engorda, conflitos pelo uso da água em região semi-árida, contaminação de corpos hídricos que são fonte de abastecimento humano para os municípios da região e aumento de doenças entre os trabalhadores rurais pela manipulação inadequada de produtos químicos durante o cultivo. Esses impactos podem ser reduzidos a níveis compatíveis com a capacidade de suporte do meio, quando respeitada a legislação e adotada boas práticas de manejo. Recomenda-se também a condução de estudos que avaliem a capacidade de suporte da bacia hidrográfica, visando balizar o licenciamento ambiental e a concessão de outorgas de água para o desenvolvimento da atividade.

This work aims to identify the main environmental aspects and impacts of the inland shrimp farming, through the analysis of the process stages and different cultivation techniques in farms located in the Baixo Jaguaribe region, Ceará State, Brazil. This evaluation was done applying questionnaires along with all farm owners or managers and making physical-chemical analysis of the effluents and the tanks soil in three selected farms. The main environmental impacts identified are related to the occupation of preservation areas by the shrimp tanks, greater conflicts between water users, contamination of the water resources that are also the main source of drinking water to the municipalities and the increase of diseases among rural workers by the inadequate manipulation of chemical products during production. These impacts can be reduced to match with the region environmental capacity, when the legislation is respected and the good practices are adopted. Besides, it is also recomended to carry out research studies that access the watershed environmental capacity to sustain shrimp farming growth, in order to orient environmental and water use licensing.

A bacia do Baixo Jaguaribe-CE depara-se com a instalação progressiva de fazendas de camarão às margens do rio Jaguaribe onde não há interferência de água salina. Esse trabalho tem como principal objetivo avaliar as características físicas, químicas e bacteriológicas dos efluentes contínuos e da despesca de fazendas de camarão, refletindo sobre os possíveis impactos do lançamento desses efluentes e formas de atenuação desses impactos. Foram analisadas amostras da água de captação e dos efluentes de dois viveiros de duas diferentes fazendas. Os parâmetros analisados para os efluentes contínuos foram: pH, turbidez, nitrato, amônia total, condutividade elétrica, DBO5, fósforo total, fósforo solúvel, alcalinidade total, sólidos totais, sólidos totais dissolvidos, sólidos suspensos, coliformes termotolerantes e clorofila a. Para os efluentes da despesca foram acrescentados OD e a fração de sólidos sedimentáveis. Os resultados mostraram que, embora os efluentes contínuos se apresentem dentro dos padrões estabelecidos pela legislação, na despesca os valores obtidos para pH, amônia total, sólidos suspensos e sedimentáveis estão acima dos valores permitidos contribuindo para a deterioração progressiva da qualidade da água dos corpos hídricos da região.

The Baixo Jaguaribe waterbasin has faced the installation of a growing number of shrimp farms along the Jaguaribe River, where there is no saline water interference. This work aims to show the chemical, physical-chemical and bacteriological characteristics of the inland shrimp farms continuous and harvest effluents, located in the Baixo Jaguaribe region, Ceará State, to discuss the possible impacts of these effluents in the water bodies and to suggest mitigating measures. It was analyzed water samples from the Jaguaribe river and the effluents of 2 tanks belonging to 2 different shrimp farms, during 1 production cycle. The parameters analyzed were: pH, turbidity, nitrate, total ammonia, electric conductivity, BOD5, total phosphorus, soluble phosphorus, total alkalinity, total solids, total dissolved solids, total suspended solids, coliform organisms and chlorophylla. The harvest effluents, its was also analyzed DO and the fraction of sedimented solids. The results showed that although the continuous effluents complied with the legislation standards, in the harvest the values obtained from pH, total ammonia , suspended and settleable solids were higher than those allowed by the legislation. The total load resulting from the great volume drained by the shrimp farms contributes to a progressive deterioration of the water bodies quality in the region.

Avaliou-se o uso de pó de coco verde e maduro na formulação de substratos para formação de mudas de cajueiro anão precoce. O experimento foi conduzido na Embrapa Agroindústria Tropical, em Fortaleza (CE). Porta-enxertos dos cajueiros foram obtidos com semente CCP06 e os enxertos, de árvores adultas CCP76, ambos clones de cajueiro anão precoce. Pó das cascas de coco verde e de coco maduro mostraram-se favoráveis ao desenvolvimento das plantas, apresentando boas características como facilidade de retirada da muda do tubete e agregação das raízes ao substrato, podendo assim, substituir o uso do solo hidromórfico, na proporção de 20%.

The aim of this work was to evaluate the use of mature and immature coir dust for preparation of substrates for grafted dwarf cashew seedlings. The trial was carried out at Embrapa Agroindústria Tropical, in Fortaleza city, Ceará State. Root-stocks were obtained from seeds of CCP06 and vegetative shoots were obtained from adult plants of CCP76, both dwarf cashew clones. Results revealed that coir dust either from mature or immature fruit was suitable for seedlings growth, being able to replace the low humid glei soil at 20%. Both substrates showed great facility to remove the seedlings from liner pots as well as good root aggregation to substrates.
